Model Making 2

Think we've just finished the model. We had to make some small minor adjustments to the cup holes. Had to cut the 4 tabs into 12 tabs. This was just to do with the thickness of the card and it not having the desired flexibility.

Here are the extra tabs that we cut. Before we cut them on the final model they were tried and tested on another piece of scrap card to prove the point if you will.

The final model shown here made from one piece of card using no other materials at all

Shovon with the final model

The model was tested with 6 cups of water to check it. There is a line that runs through the middle of the 3 holes that is weak but i think that thats down to the way the grain of the card runs and would have been better to have the grain run the other way. This would also help the two support flaps as they are weak aruond where they were cut but as i say if the model was cut an other way it would be ok.

Drawings

Hey guys,
The detail drawings are done, two pages with dimensions and bending placements.

It will look like the pictures Abbey sent you the other day when its complete. That arc bend on both sides is the last thing to press, basically it just is an aesthetic feature that will flatten to a 45 degree angle on that bend.

If you wish, you can glue the side tabs that reach up and slot into the handle at the top, but hopefully they should hold together. As specified in the drawings you will have to change the cut width for those slot cuts to the thickness of the cardboard you choose, but just make sure it's an interference fit!

I'll send the drawings out in .pdf form and will email them out to everyone.

Cheers,

Tim

Re:Refinement

Hi Abbey & Tim:

Thanks for sharing your pictures and also for the new attempt :) Yap, i think the attempt is good. But personally, i am lil bit confused whether this could hold the 6 cup of coffees when they are fully filled up with coffee. Suppose each one weighs 500 ml. so for six cups it will be 3 litres. So, i think we must consider this weight variable. It could me more or less. (but i just considered the medium cup). Can you pls explain, how it will support the full weight. If you make the handle just by glued it with each other, may be that can collapse. It's one of the major part of this holder.
Hope, your detailed design should answer all my confusions. ;)

Cheers!

Models

Alrite Guys

The models look pretty good and should be easy enough to make out of card i would have said.

There was talk of us being able to double up pieces for strength if it was needed

Cant wait to see the detailed drawings, we're booked into the workshop on tuesday so should have a model made by the time your in on wednesday? Still cant get my head around the global time thing!

Cheers

13-10-09 Refinement

Hello all,

Surprise about the cardboard hey, understandably it meant a lot of our concepts were useless.
We noticed that the main issue with the concepts that did make it through was stability and support. That matrix was pretty extreme and hard to follow, but we agreed with most of it and believed the most feasible was concept 10 and chose to refine it further.

We really tried to make it as strong and as easy to put together as possible.

Tim will be organising detailed drawings and posting them up before your Friday class.

Here are some pics of our refinement process (and some just of us so you know who we are):

TIM

ABBEY

ATTEMPT #1

Even though it was simple to construct this design had no support underneath the cups.

ATTEMPT #2

We feel that this one worked really well, it's easy to construct, has minimal waste and gives support to the base of the coffee cups. This is the concept we went with and the following are some images to show how it can be assembled.

1. The flat layout

2. Handles should be glued together for support

3. Locking in side tab will keep the base from dropping and the structure from losing it's shape
4. Fold out the edge of the handles by 45degrees to lock the tabs further
This one is just a shot of the model once we added a concave curve to the edge. You might not be able to see it very well in this image but it does look quite effective.
We hope you like the design. As always there is an opportunity for changes to be made if you feel it's necessary.
Detailed drawing with dimensions is on it's way... =)

Evaluation and Selection

Hi guys,

here is the link of the designs we choose to evaluate from our concepts. Ours are numbered from 1-12 and your ones are from A-E.

Click here to view our numbered final designs >>

You can also download the evaluation sheet by clicking here>
I also sent you the document with the evaluation criteria and results by e-mail.

We have put in bold the top scoring 3 designs. After our class today, whereby we were informed that the holder must be made in card board, we might have to revise some of the designs. Pls review it and tell us what you think.

The last designs that Rhuaridth sent were just a variations of some of the final designs, in order to make them functional by using card board as material. PLease review them and send us your thoughts.

Cheers!
